How Catholic bishops fail their country

I’ve been disappointed in the way the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has made opposition to abortion their litmus test for assessing candidates. Certainly their decision that care for the marginalized was less important for Catholic voters than protecting the unborn contributed to the Trump victory. And even post-election, the bishops had been very reluctant to raise their voices against the draconian measures President Trump had promised. New York Cardinal Patrick Dolan’s silence at the inauguration, where he gave the invocation, stands in stark contrast to the courage of Washington D. C. Episcopal Bishop the Right Rev. Mariann Budde, who pleaded for mercy for immigrants and other marginalized communities at an inaugural prayer service.
